How long do sessions last?
A typical family, engagement, or bridal session lasts about an hour. Milestone sessions are 30 minutes. For newborn sessions, I reserve 2 hours, but they generally last 1- 1 1/2 hours. There's plenty of time for feeding, changing, soothing, etc. :)
How long have you been a photographer?
About 15 years. I started in film with an old Canon AE-1 from the 70's and focused on travel photography. My work was displayed in galleries and various venues in Ohio and Charleston. In 2009 I started photographing weddings and families. I worked as a marine biologist for 12 years before switching to photography full time.
Do you backup your photos?
YES! I have 4 backup hard drives - 2 off site, plus Cloud storage.
What should I wear to my session?
Something you feel comfortable in. Just try to stay away from lots of writing on clothing, logos, cartoon characters, etc. You can read a blog post I wrote about this topic here: What to wear for a family photography session.
What if it rains?
We will have to reschedule outdoor sessions if it rains. My camera doesn't like to get wet! If it's chilly out I suggest you bundle up and go with it (within reason - I won't make you pose in 20-degree weather!). If it's overcast - Great! Overcast days are perfect for photography - the light is uniform and very flattering on the skin. If you can't reschedule due to bad weather I will refund your payment.
What time of day are your sessions?
Since most of my sessions are outside, I work around the best light - mornings and late afternoon/evenings. Depending on the time of year, appointment times are usually between 7 and 10 am and 4 and 7 pm. Newborn and baby sessions are generally scheduled in the morning working around napping and feeding schedules. Obviously, weddings and events are based on your schedule.
What do I need to know for my newborn session?
Lifestyle newborn sessions take place in your home and last 1-2 hours. They focus on the connection between parents and baby. I do not use a lot of "props" and won't be putting your baby into poses. Babies do not need to be asleep during the session, but it's OK if they are. Keep clothing simple - a white onesie for example. One outfit change is fine, but babies do not like a bunch of costume changes! These sessions are very documentary. I will be shooting in several rooms of your house - generally the living room, nursery, and master bedroom - so please plan accordingly and straighten up rooms and clear clutter off surfaces. If the weather is nice we can take some photos outside in front of your house, on the porch, or in the backyard.
Can I show you some ideas I have for photos?
Absolutely! You can email me your ideas or share a Pinterest board. I'm always happy to include some of your ideas and "must have" shots.
What if I'm having a destination wedding/engagement?
If your event is outside of Charleston or Columbia there will be a travel fee. Contact me with your details to get a quote.
What is a model release?
A signed model release allows me to use some of your photos in my portfolio/on my website. Signing is completely optional.
How long will it take to get my pictures?
For a typical 1 hour session, it takes me 2 weeks to finish editing and to get your online album ready to view. For weddings, it's about 4 weeks. Only a fraction of my time is spent actually taking the photos - most of the work comes afterwards - I want to make your photos look their absolute best! I will contact you the moment they are ready.
How many pictures will I get?
For a 1-hour session, I deliver on average 50-60 photos. For a 6-hour wedding, clients generally receive between 400 and 500 photos. Your online gallery will be available for 6 months.
