Best Places for Christmas Photos | Charleston

Untitled photo

Christmas in Charleston is magical! There are some beautiful locations to take night time holiday photos in the holy city. Here are my favorite locations to view Christmas lights and photograph holiday sessions:

1. Marion Square

The colorful Christmas tree in the middle of Marion  Square is the highlight here. Be sure to walk underneath the tree and look up (and spin around!). Also be sure to walk the paths cutting across the park to see Christmas trees decorated by local school children. The most "Charleston" part of the Marion Square decorations are the palm trees covered in white lights. Marion Square at Christmas is the perfect location for family photos, an engagement session or even a proposal!

2.  College of Charleston Cistern

The College of Charleston light show has become a favorite holiday tradition. 2022 marks the sixth year for the dazzling light display. The show runs nightly through January 2. Shows are every half hour between 6 and 9pm. The show is produced by C of C alum, John Reynolds, an award-winning lighting designer. Definitely check out this FREE event and take some holiday photos while you're there.

3. Colonial Lake

Colonial Lake is magical year round, any time of day, but at Christmas time there is a little tree in the middle of the lake that makes it even more special. One of my favorite family-friendly events is Light the Lake, which happens in early December and features crafts, music and of course, the tree lighting. The tree is lit up nightly through the holiday season.

4. Dock Street Theater

The Dock Street Theater is always looking festive in December - both inside and out!  Be sure to check out their holiday shows. This year it's the classic A Christmas Carol!  There's flying! One year when someone started flying across the stage, the person behind me whispered "Expecto Patronum!" (If you know, you know.)

5. Charleston Place

Charleston Place is always beautifully decorated for the holidays. My favorite spot is the lobby with the two grand staircases and a Christmas tree in the middle. This year Charleston Place and Market Street will be transformed into a European-style holiday market. And there will be snow twice nightly! Details:

Enjoy the season!
